Marmaris is not only a modern resort, but also has a deep-rooted history of thousands of years. Its history from ancient times to the present day makes it even more intriguing. The first settlement traces of the region date back to 3000 BC.

History of Marmaris from Physkos to Ottoman

The oldest known name of Marmaris, which was located in the Caria region in ancient times, is Physkos. This important port city played a strategic role in trade between Rhodes and other Mediterranean civilisations. Physkos came under the rule of Persia, Macedonia, the Kingdom of Rhodes and the Roman Empire. The city, which retained its importance during the Byzantine Empire, joined the lands of the Principality of Menteşe in the 14th century, and then passed under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.

Marmaris Castle and Archeological Museum

One of the most important buildings that sheds light on the history of Marmaris is undoubtedly Marmaris Castle. The castle, whose first construction dates back to 1044 BC, was surrounded by Alexander the Great and continued to exist due to its strategic importance. Most of its current state was built by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent in 1522 before the Rhodes campaign. Today, the castle serves as the Archeological Museum and exhibits the artefacts extracted from the region. While visiting the museum, you can enjoy the magnificent harbour view from the castle. The artefacts exhibited inside reveal how rich a history the region has.

Origin of the Name Marmaris

There are various rumours about the origin of the name Marmaris. The best known story is that on the return of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent’s Rhodes expedition, he did not like the castle and said  “Hang your architect!” It is what he said and over time, this expression turned into “Marmaris”. But it’s just a myth. According to historical records, the name of the region in the Ottoman period is “Marmaris” or “Mermeris” and the name is thought to come from the rich marble deposits here.
